Merrill's Family

Merrill is the son of Wanda Garfield Cook and noted scientist Dr. Melvin A Cook, a professor for many years at the University of Utah and the inventor of slurry explosives, used widely in the mining industry. Merrill and his father founded the Cook Slurry Company in 1974, and Merrill has served for over 25 years as its president and CEO.

Merrill met Camille Sanders just a few weeks after returning from his British Mission for the LDS Church. Merrill was completely smitten and was lucky enough to marry Camille two years later. Camille is a well known singer and vocal instructor in Utah, often performing in the Temple Square Concert Series at the Assembly Hall. She has performed a number of lead roles for the Utah Opera Company and the Salt Lake Opera Theater. While Merrill plays the clarinet (admittedly not too well, and can't carry a tune), the five Cook children, Brian, Alison, Barbara Ann, David, and Michelle have all inherited their mother’s vocal talents, performing in glee clubs and school choirs at Highland, East, Yale, Pepperdine, Vanderbilt, and St. John’s.

Merrill and Camille’s oldest son, Brian, is a scientist with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, who has recently decided to go into patent law. Brian is married to Nipa Gupta and they have three adorable girls. Alison is a clinical psychologist, married to Jeff Ross, and they have just had their first child, a darling little boy. Barbara Ann and her husband Glen Crowther teach Sanskrit and Ayurvedic Medicine in New Zealand and are expecting their first child in July. David, an attorney with the Treasury Department in Washington, D.C., is married to Kimber Tillemann-Dick. Michelle is finishing up her Master’s degree in Religion and is functioning as the Deputy Campaign Manager for her dad’s campaign.
